May News!

May is an exciting month in the SVM office as we prepare to attend the Rail Infrastructure Network conference as exhibitors for the first time.  The conference is being held on Thursday 22nd May at the Glasgow Hilton on William Street, from 9.30am-1.30pm and we can’t wait to talk to as many people as possible about all the great projects that we are working on.  So please come along and meet some of the SVM team and hear all about our news in person!  There may even be some goodies on the go to make it extra worthwhile!

Meanwhile back in the slightly less glamorous but highly productive office, there are plenty new projects in May.  We have been asked to look at further AFA works at Cardenden Station; some water supply issues at Barhill Station; remedial works following a fuel spill at a Glasgow depot; and some CCTV design at Banff.  We are also in the early stages of significant projects covering the Haymarket to Dalmeny route LV design and a new phase of ESD works at multiple locations on the Glasgow to Edinburgh route.

May’s most prominent projects include lighting control and ventilation refurbishment at Edinburgh Waverley; Dunkeld access ramp; traincare facilities at Dundee; PSP, compressors and retail supplies at Glasgow Central; Clacton wheel lathe; Darlington Station Capacity; legacy migration works and 11kV renewals at multiple Railway sites.  As well as these, we are also continuing to cover several projects with sites spread across the country including REB wraparound protection; remedials design; energy reports; Scottish Heritage power supplies design, UPS renewals; depot CET/water facilities design; and design for station platforms on the West Highland main line.  The main Edinburgh and Glasgow stations are also packed with more smaller scale projects such as Level 4 TPE, electrical surveys, and plant arch fire protection at Glasgow Central and design for multiple DBs, ventilation, calorifiers,  digital advertising boards and distribution design in Edinburgh.  Elsewhere, we’re busy up North with CSMD sump pump works, Caledonia Sleeper servicing, replacement control panels, fuel tank failure analysis, Motorail buffer stop lighting and train crew accommodation all at Inverness. Meanwhile water pipe diversion, pumping station and signalling power works are ongoing in Dundee as are those on the Aberdeen to Central Belt and Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie routes.  Nearer the heart of the country we are working on resignalling design in the Perth area; a PHCC in Arbroath; car park CCTV at Winchburgh; walkway lighting at Craigentinny Depot; Corkerhill Departure Roads; and the ongoing electrification works at East Kilbride.  Design works for Portobello are making good progress as are CETs at Craigentinny; DPS at Broomloan; GRIP 5 AFA at Balgray station; and Yoker MELF.  In Ayrshire and the Borders we continue with Irvine MDU; re-energisation works at Ayr Station; and tanking works in Dumfries.  If Scotland wasn’t busy enough, we also remain involved in several projects South of the border including Transpennine Express premises in Hull, Newcastle and York; footbridge lighting in York; Ravensthorpe SFC; and CCTV in a station car park in Darlington.  There are various works at multiple depots including Tysley, Eastcroft and Etches Park while Ferrybridge to Goole route works are coming close to completion.

All of this doesn’t mean that we have forgotten about the commercial sector, with our biggest non Railway project being Stranraer Marina expansion – an interesting project providing a nice change of pace from the Railway!  We are also still working on office refurbishments in Annan and Garscadden; a residential conversion in Blair Atholl; a healthcare facility in Elland; two recycling plants in the Glasgow area; and ongoing works for Glasgow’s famous SEC.;

May is a busy month as always and we are delighted to get a little extra man-power with Alasdair Banks joining us for a summer placement during his University studies.  We look forward to welcoming Alasdair and hope that he finds his few months with us educational and enjoyable.  If you think you might be in the market for a more permanent seat at the SVM table, either in the mechanical and electrical disciplines or even some part time admin assistance, then we want to hear from you.  Send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and become part of the team!
