August News!

As Spider-Man swings through Glasgow, SVM are sliding into the back half of another year with August practically over and the summer holidays coming to an end once again.  Still, this just means that everyone at SVM is recharged and ready to delve into some exciting projects as we head into Autumn at full-speed.

August has been busy in the SVM office with lots of new summer blockbusters!  We’re on the cusp of beginning a large scale set of LV AC/DC power and Telecoms surveys with sites spread all across the UK; there are new Access For All works at Dunbarton Central and Bellgrove Stations; and design for a bridge refurbishment at South Gyle Station is just getting underway.  We have also begun looking at projects for Railway sites in Scunthorpe and Cleethorpes involving toilet refurbishments and electrical design at Mossend Rail Terminal.

Our ongoing projects in August are led by fuel tank failure analysis at Inverness; UPS surveys at multiple railway sites; ESD design between Glasgow and Edinburgh; Clacton wheel lathe works; Perth modernisation; and Balgray Station AFA.  There remain a lot of projects around the main Scottish stations with design for lighting control, ventilation refurbishment, advertising boards, calorifiers; and distribution at Waverley; and retail supplies, Level 4 TPE, electrical surveys, PSP and compressor works, and plant arch fire protection at Glasgow Central.  Spread across the country we have works at multiple sites covering 11kV Renewals; Legacy Migration design; and Heritage Migration works; while we remain busy in the North with pumping station and signalling power works in Dundee; CCTV design at Banff; and works on the Aberdeen to Central Belt and Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie routes.  Inverness is still a busy place too, with CSMD sump pump works, replacement control panels, Motorail buffer stop lighting; train crew accommodation; and sleeper servicing design.  More centrally we continue to provide building warrant assistance at Yoker and Corkerhill depots; further AFA works at Cardenden Station; some water supply issues at Barrhill Station; and LV design on the Haymarket to Dalmeny route.  MELF works at Yoker are ongoing as is design for a PHCC in Arbroath; the station car park at Winchburgh; walkway lighting at Craigentinny Depot; Corkerhill Departure Roads; and electrification elements at East Kilbride.  Design works for Portobello are edging nearer completion; while we remain involved with CETs at Craigentinny; remedial works following a fuel spill at a Glasgow depot; the wheel lathe at Cadder Yard; and stabling roads at Millerhill Depot.  Meanwhile, a little further West, we continue to provide design advice for re-energisation works at Ayr Station and tanking works in Dumfries.  England is also still a regular destination for SVM, with continuing works at Etches Park Depot Transpennine Express premises in Hull, Newcastle and York; in York for footbridge lighting; Ravensthorpe SFC; and the Ferrybridge to Goole route.  Meanwhile Darlington is home to a car park CCTV project and signalling power works.

Our biggest commercial project at the moment is the large scale design works for Stranraer Marina expansion, which continues to provide an interesting diversion from the Railway!  As well as this we also remain involved with works for office refurbishments in Annan and Garscadden; and two recycling plants in the Glasgow area.

It’s always a massive achievement to see staff progressing at SVM, either through ongoing further education, continuous professional development or the real life experience that is accumulated by being involved in our many varied projects  We are therefore delighted to offer our congratulations to Gary Douglas who has recently been promoted to Electrical Engineer and we look forward to seeing his performance in the role.  There’s so much scope for development at SVM, so if your spidey-senses are tingling and you think you could navigate this fast paced environment, either in the mechanical and electrical disciplines or even some part time admin assistance, then we want to hear from you.  Send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and take the first step!
