July News

Summer is upon us and holiday time has arrived, with staff members heading off to exotic destinations such as Spain, Turkey and Prague – but never fear, there will always be an excellent team available at SVM right through the summer.

There are lots of new works in the pipeline this July, with several projects covering large scale works at multiple sites across the UK.  This puts us in an excellent starting place for the remaining half of 2025 and it’s a great credit to our team that we are in such demand from clients who have been collaborating with us for more than 10 years now.

July’s biggest projects for SVM include Dundee stabling works; ESD design between Glasgow and Edinburgh; retail supplies at Glasgow Central Station; Darlington car park and signalling power; Perth modernisation works; Yoker MELF design; Inverness sleeper servicing; and Balgray Station AFA.  Meanwhile we are packing our sunscreen and heading all across the country to cover multiple sites for 11kV Renewals; UPS design; Legacy Migration design; Heritage Migration works; design for station platforms on the West Highland main line; and Fife Circle resignalling.  Homing in on the North of the country, we remain involved with CCTV design at Banff; CSMD sump pump works, replacement control panels, fuel tank failure analysis, Motorail buffer stop lighting and train crew accommodation all at Inverness; water pipe diversion, pumping station and signalling power works in Dundee; Dunkeld access ramp; and works on the Aberdeen to Central Belt and Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie routes.  In the central belt, we are providing building warrant assistance at Yoker and Corkerhill depots; further AFA works at Cardenden Station; some water supply issues at Barhill Station; and LV design on the Haymarket to Dalmeny route.  Design is ongoing for a PHCC in Arbroath; the car park at Winchburgh; walkway lighting at Craigentinny Depot; Corkerhill Departure Roads; and ongoing electrification works at East Kilbride.  Design works for Portobello are making good progress as are CETs at Craigentinny; recently completed DPS at Broomloan; and remedial works following a fuel spill at a Glasgow depot.  In the main Edinburgh and Glasgow stations we remain busy with design for lighting control, ventilation refurbishment, multiple DBs, calorifiers; and distribution at Waverley; and Level 4 TPE, electrical surveys, PSP and compressor works, retail supplies; and plant arch fire protection at Glasgow Central.  At both these stations we have also begun some new works associated with the advertising boards; while new works are well underway for the wheel lathe at Cadder Yard and stabling roads at Millerhill Depot.  Heading West, we are still providing design advice for re-energisation works at Ayr Station; and tanking works in Dumfries; while across the border we are reaching the end of several projects at Etches Park Depot and awaiting the green light to commence several more!  Meanwhile, wheel lathe works in Clacton, Transpennine Express premises in Hull, Newcastle and York; footbridge lighting in York; Ravensthorpe SFC; and Ferrybridge to Goole route works are all still ongoing

Commercial design, as always, remains important to us and this month, we are still heavily involved with large scale design works for Stranraer Marina expansion, which has been extremely interesting and a welcome excursion opportunity.  There are also continued works for office refurbishments in Annan and Garscadden; and two recycling plants in the Glasgow area.

We’ve already taken a big swing into summer by passing our RISQS audit once again and are delighted with the excellent results.  We’ve made a lot of excellent progress so far this year and the next 6 months look to be even better - so if you think you would be at home in the fast paced environment of the SVM office, either in the mechanical and electrical disciplines or even some part time admin assistance, then we want to hear from you.  Send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and join the team!
