August News!

The summer holiday period is over with the schools all soon heading back – but here at the SVM office we never stop learning and are delighted that August has brought us even more interesting projects to hone our skills!

August sees a slew of new projects with design works for Kilwinning BESS; Ayrshire signalling renewals; Cathcart ECR; and Perth Carriage Sidings.  We have been asked to look at Newton Station waiting shelter; and more AFA works at Bellgrove Station; as well as emergency lighting at the IECC.  We are on the verge of beginning some Telecoms cable design and FTNx core refresh works; while down South we have been to visit Pewsey for VAMOS works and are undertaking design for Guildford MDU.

The big learners this month are headed up by Waverley lighting detailed design; HST platform extensions, Stranraer Marina; Perth modernisation; Cadder wheel lathe; national Megastream Design; and 11kV Renewal works.  We are covering works across the country once again this month with sleeper servicing; CSMD sump pump works; TMD design; and TMD welders’ sockets all at Inverness; while, close by, there are AFA schemes at Inverurie and Nairn; detailed design in the Dundee to Montrose area; a level crossing at Gartly; and the design stage of the Dundee Stabling project.  Coming into the central belt, the main stations at Glasgow and Edinburgh are busy at the former for retail services, heritage migration works, power alterations for the Caledonia sleeper lounge, and HV Arch ventilation; and at the latter for lighting and lighting control and 5G equipment.  There are welfare works for Haymarket Depot; lighting at Clarkston goods yard; Motherwell PSP design; Rutherglen Test Track; design works around Law and Newton on the WCML; and AFA temporary works at Cardenden. We are also still providing design advice for Yoker Bridge Deck; Balgray Station AFA; MELF works at Yoker; electrical design at Mossend Rail Terminal; and design for power and lighting at the Glasgow Subway.  Meanwhile we are keen to get started on Eastfield Depot and design for the Corkerhill Depot apprentice building.  Towards the South of Scotland we are providing site support for the previously designed Dumfries tanking works; Heritage migration at Lockerbie station; works at Bowland Junction; and Ayr Station.  Thurles REB remains ongoing in Ireland; while England remains home to works for Sudbrook pumping Station (serving the Severn Tunnel); shore supplies in Stourbridge and Banbury; Clacton Wheel Lathe; Darlington resignalling and Station Car Park CCTV; Chester Recontrol design; FTNx Power Design at Evesham; design at Warrington training facility; and M&E design at Queens Park Station, which is about to begin.  There are also several projects scattered across the country including ScotRail depots; CP7 UPS renewals; heritage migration works; EV chargers at Railway sites; REB wraparound protection; ECML feeder migration design; and ESD design between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We remain involved in the commercial sector this month with works at a new healthcare facility near Edinburgh, and an initial look at electrical and lighting installations for a foil manufacturing facility.  Stranraer Marina expansion is ongoing, with further works currently getting underway, and we also remain involved with upgrades to a materials shed at one of our client’s premises; office refurbishments in Annan and Garscadden; and an organic waste recycling plant in the Glasgow area.

There some new faces at SVM this month with Rory Penman joining us as Assistant Mechanical engineer and Flynn McLaughlin taking up the position of student trainee, while undertaking his University studies.  We wish both of them a warm welcome and hope that they go on to thrive at SVM.  Sadly there is also a goodbye this month as our admin assistant Sarah McLean moves on to pastures new.  Sarah has been an asset to the team over the past year and we wish her well in all future endeavours.  The seats are moving around but there may still be one more so if you are a mechanical or electrical engineer at the assistant level, or seeking a position as a part time admin assistant, please submit your CV to Elise McLean at elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk – we would love to hear from you.
